QuadKids launched in Havering.

Despite the best attempts of the British climate to dampen the proceedings QuadKids came to the London Borough of Havering for the first time with a small but enjoyable event at Raphael Park, Romford on Saturday.

Held in conjunction with the Borough’s Going for Gold Community Sports Day, the event took place at alongside a 5k fun run, tennis coaching, football penalty and basketball shoot-outs and a bouncy castle which all added to the carnival atmosphere.

The heavy early morning rain failed to clear as early as predicted which led to a delayed start on the damp specially laid out grass track but by the end of the morning the humid weather and hot competition all ensured that the initial dampness was soon forgotten.

Havering Mayesbrook’s Doug Tierney, who organised the event along with Essex Athletics Network Activator Tony Benton, said 'Our first venture into QuadKids resulted in a successful, highly enjoyable event. Although numbers were small due in no small part to the change in the weather, those youngsters who were there thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Some 20 volunteers from the Club - young and old - turned up to work on the various activities and were quick to ask 'when’s the next one?'

Among these volunteers was the home club’s GB cross country international Lauren Deadman who handed out the certificates at the end and managed one of the enthusiastic groups.

Overall the highest scores were gained by Elliott Nunn (Coopers Coborn School & Havering Mayesbrook) and Chioma Abazie (Westcliff High School for Girls) but all the participants, virtually all of whom were new to QuadKids, took home a points tally which they can aspire to better next time out.

Tony Benton, the Essex Network Activator, concluded “This may have been the first QuadKids in Havering but it definitely won’t be the last.  Everyone has got a taste for this quickfire competition format and we hope to build on these small beginnings and go on to bigger & better things – not least because Havering Primary Schools are adopting QuadKids for their annual championships next month which will require military style planning and precision with the huge numbers taking part. We’re all up for the challenge!!
