Harlow Sportshall Athletics & Boccia Challenge Cup

An Athletics Event for people with a disability or learning difficulty was held on Saturday 11TH February at Mark Hall Sports Centre. The teams taking part were from Harlow Athletics Club All Ability Section.

The day with 25 competitors, split into 4 groups, took part in events such as Turbo Javelin, Chest Push, Long Jump, Vertical Jump, Speed Bounce, Racing and Relay Racing. In the senior men’s category winners were Aaron Challis, boys under 13 section winner was Jack Long. The Women’s category was won by Emma Kirby and the Junior Girls was won by Jade Ralph.  Medals were presented to everyone that took part with the Blue team coming 1st narrowly followed by the Red Team. There was also a Boccia Competition which saw the Red Team coming 1st, the Blue Team coming 2nd  with the orange and Green Team following in 3rd and 4th Place.

A big thanks was passed on to the funding partners Essex Legacy 2012, Essex County Council, Comic Relief and Harlow Recreation Trust, supported by Essex Community Foundation.  The competition was organised by All Ability Sports & Leisure Group with coaches and volunteers helping from Harlow Athletics Club All Ability Section. The project coordinator explained that the reason this day was run was because there is a need for more competitive opportunities for people with a disability to compete and show their potential, and competitions like this help athletes find out their own personal potential with some having great chances to make National Paralympic Events. Also it is great seeing all the participants having lots of fun taking part. and everyone found the day both challenging and rewarding.

This was also a great pre games event for the next All Ability Athletics and Boccia Challenge Cup Harlow which will be taking place at the Mark Hall Athletics Track on 21st April 2012 (see entry form on right), where many other athletes from across Essex and Teams and the East Region will also be taking part. Also the Harlow Squad will be getting selected to take part in the Eastern Regional Athletics Championships taking place in Chelmsford on 19th May .
