What are athletics networks?

Athletics Networks are an initiative launched in 2009 by England Athletics and supported by sponsors McCain. There are now over 50 funded networks delivering across England, involving over 450 athletics clubs, in addition to a range of non-funded networks. These are all at different stages of delivery: some have been delivering for almost two years, while some like the Essex Athletics Network only started in Autumn 2010. All network funding is confirmed for twelve months, with a further 24 months available in principle, based on successful delivery against the network plan and McCain Athletics Network Success Factors.

The success of networks can be identified clearly through the number of projects being delivered, and the impact these projects are having on the local coaching and club infrastructure.

Our Aims

The Essex Athletics Network aims to build on the strong tradition of athletics in Essex by:

  • Breaking down barriers so that clubs work together in joint initiatives and share coaching and other expertise, so that all round provision in clubs improves and is sustainable.
  • Developing and recruiting more coaches, helpers & officials in order to allow clubs to develop existing athletes, identify potential athletes and offer more training and competition.
  • Improving links with other partners – schools, colleges & universities, school sports partnerships, local authorities – and coordinating initiatives better.
  • Delivering a coordinated strategy for coaching and competition to disabled athletes and potential athletes
